Yuma's medical and dental practices by the numbers

  • 104 offices of physicians with paid employees, employing 668 people in the March 2023 pay period. About six in ten of them, 62, had fewer than five employees (U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023, Yuma County).
  • 46 offices of dentists with 286 employees; 20 had fewer than five employees (same source).
  • 302 ambulatory health care establishments in all, with 3,655 employees. Besides physician and dental offices, the group includes 64 offices of other health practitioners, such as chiropractors, optometrists and therapists, and 38 outpatient care centers (same source).
  • Practices with no paid employees: 93 physician offices, 55 dental offices and 215 other health practitioners in 2024 (U.S. Census Bureau, Nonemployer Statistics 2024, Yuma County).
  • Health care and social assistance had the largest annual payroll of any sector in Yuma County, $535.6 million in 2023 (County Business Patterns 2023). That total also covers hospitals and social services, not only practices.

Most local practices, in other words, are small businesses. In a practice that size, the owner's own credit and finances usually figure in a lending partner's review alongside the practice's.

Equipment: imaging, dental chairs and practice technology

Clinical equipment is costly, specialized and often comes with installation, so equipment financing is a natural fit. Typical requests include:

  • Dental: chairs and delivery units, operatory lights, sterilization equipment, intraoral and panoramic X-ray, and cone-beam imaging.
  • Medical: X-ray and ultrasound, exam tables, and diagnostic and in-office lab equipment.
  • Technology: electronic health records and practice-management systems, and the hardware that runs them.

Points worth settling before you request financing:

  • Get the whole cost on the quote. Installation, room preparation, training and software licenses can add up. Some partners finance these costs with the equipment and some finance only the equipment itself.
  • Lease or own. A dental chair may serve for many years, which favors owning. Imaging and software are replaced more often, which can make a lease with an upgrade option worth comparing.
  • Refurbished equipment. Partners consider age and condition, and may ask for documentation of both.

The equipment loan payment calculator shows the payment arithmetic for a rate and term you enter. Lending partners set actual terms.

Build-outs, new operatories and second offices

Adding operatories, fitting out a new suite or opening a second office combines construction, equipment and costs such as design and permits. A common structure is a term loan for the build-out, with the equipment financed separately against the equipment. Partners will usually want the contractor's bid, the lease (including any improvement allowance from the landlord) and the equipment quotes. Our guide to build-out and remodel financing walks through structuring and budgeting the project.

Permits set the timeline. For commercial projects inside the City of Yuma, the city says plan review generally takes 15 work days (City of Yuma Building Permits), and the 2024 International Building Code took effect there on November 3, 2025 (City of Yuma Building Safety). Build that time into your plan before rent and payroll for the new space begin. The contractor's side of the same project is covered on our construction financing page.

Working capital while insurance claims are paid

Much of a practice's revenue arrives well after the visit. Claims go to insurers, are processed and paid on each payer's schedule, and some come back for correction. Payroll, rent and supplies don't wait for any of that. That timing gap is the practice version of a working capital need:

  • A line of credit suits a gap that opens and closes again and again: draw while claims are outstanding, and repay as payments arrive.
  • A working capital loan suits a one-time gap, such as adding a provider who is still being credentialed with insurers, or a slowdown in payments after a billing-system change.

Practices are sometimes offered merchant cash advances too. A merchant cash advance is not a loan. The funder buys a share of your future receipts. If most of your revenue comes from insurers rather than patients paying at the front desk, ask exactly which receipts the funder is buying and how the debit amount is set: a debit based on total bank deposits can take a share of insurance payments as well. Compare loan options before you sign.

Rockstone Lending doesn't advise on billing, coding or reimbursement. Talk to your billing service or practice consultant about those.

What lending partners typically look at

Each partner sets its own criteria. For medical and dental practices, partners commonly ask about:

  • Collections history: business bank statements and, often, receivables and collections reports from your practice-management system.
  • Payer mix: roughly how revenue splits between commercial insurers, government programs and patients.
  • Ownership and licensing: who owns the practice, and the licenses of its providers.
  • Time in business, or the provider's track record if the practice is new.
  • Equipment quotes and the office lease.
  • Existing debt, including earlier equipment financing.
  • Credit history of the practice and its owners.

Our business loan documents checklist covers the general list.

Rockstone Lending connects you with lending partners; partners make credit decisions and set rates and terms. Our part is to sort out what the practice needs (equipment, space or cash flow) and put the request in front of partners that fund medical and dental practices. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I finance dental chairs and imaging in the same request?

Often, yes, when they are on one quote or a set of quotes the partner reviews together. Some partners prefer a separate agreement for each vendor. Ask before you place the orders.

Should a practice lease or buy imaging equipment?

It depends on how long you expect to use it. Owning suits equipment you'll keep for many years. A lease can suit imaging or technology you expect to replace or upgrade sooner. Compare the total cost and the end-of-term options, explained in our guide to lease buyout options, and ask your accountant about the tax treatment.

Can financing cover a build-out in a leased office?

It can. Improvements to leased space can't be repossessed the way equipment can, so partners tend to look closely at the practice's cash flow and how long the lease runs. Bring the contractor's bid and the lease.

Can a practice get working capital while waiting on insurance payments?

That is a common use of a line of credit or working capital loan. A partner will want to see your collections history, so have recent bank statements and receivables reports ready. Approval and terms are the partner's decision.

Can I finance chiropractic or other clinic equipment?

Often, yes. Chiropractic tables, therapy and diagnostic equipment and other clinic equipment are financed much like medical and dental equipment, with the vendor's quote at the center. Whether a partner finances a particular item is its decision.

I'm opening my own office. Can I apply before the practice has revenue?

You can submit a request, but whether a partner will fund a practice that hasn't opened depends on that partner. Read our guide to funding a new business for what changes when a business is new.
