Yuma and Yuma County business statistics
Most Yuma businesses are small employers. Across Yuma County, 3,376 establishments had paid employees in 2023, and 1,661 of them had fewer than five employees (Census County Business Patterns, 2023, Yuma County). Another 13,837 businesses had no paid employees in 2024 (Census Nonemployer Statistics, 2024, Yuma County); the two counts come from different programs and years, so they can't simply be added together.
One caution before the ZIP-level numbers: federal business statistics are published by ZIP code, and Yuma's ZIP codes don't follow city limits. ZIP 85364, where our office is, extends beyond the city, and ZIP 85365 also takes in part of Fortuna Foothills, Yuma Proving Ground and several unincorporated communities (Census 2020 ZIP-to-place relationship file). The figures below describe those ZIP areas, not the city alone.
- ZIP 85364: 1,466 employer establishments in 2023, 725 of them with fewer than five employees. They included 297 in health care and social assistance, 203 in retail trade, 158 in accommodation and food services and 107 in construction (Census ZIP Code Business Patterns, 2023, ZIP 85364).
- ZIP 85365: 1,084 employer establishments in 2023, including 138 in construction, 138 in retail trade, 111 in accommodation and food services and 67 in transportation and warehousing (Census ZIP Code Business Patterns, 2023, ZIP 85365).
Those counts include only businesses with paid employees; they leave out self-employed owners and farm production itself. Self-employment is part of the picture too: an estimated 7.7 percent of Yuma city's employed civilian residents were self-employed, with a margin of error of 1.2 points (Census ACS 2020-2024 5-year estimates, Yuma city).
Agriculture
Agriculture and agribusiness contributed $3.9 billion to the Yuma County economy in 2022, according to University of Arizona researchers (University of Arizona CALES, 2022 figures, Yuma County). Because Census business counts exclude crop and animal production, most of that activity doesn't show up in the ZIP figures above.
Military and federal employment
Marine Corps Air Station Yuma covers five square miles of southeastern Yuma, and the air station describes approximately 4,000 active-duty Marines and Sailors serving there (MCAS Yuma, About page, accessed 2026-10-14). U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground, elsewhere in Yuma County, reports over 2,000 civilian personnel (Yuma Proving Ground website, accessed 2026-10-14). The federal presence shows in resident data as well: an estimated 7.6 percent of Yuma city's employed civilian residents work for the federal government (Census ACS 2020-2024 5-year estimates, Yuma city), against 2.7 percent for Arizona as a whole (same survey, statewide).
Funding needs common to Yuma industries
Every business is different, but the industries above tend to raise a familiar set of funding questions:
- Clinics, dental offices and other health care providers often finance diagnostic, treatment and office equipment through equipment financing rather than paying cash. See medical and dental practice financing.
- Contractors finance trucks, trailers and heavy equipment the same way, and some use a business line of credit to carry payroll and materials between progress payments. Our page on construction and contractor financing covers both.
- Restaurants and retailers with daily card sales are often offered merchant cash advances. An MCA is not a loan; compare any offer with working capital loans before you decide, and see restaurant financing for the other options.
- Retailers and wholesalers that buy stock ahead of sales can compare lines of credit, loans and inventory-secured financing on our inventory financing page.
All of these are gathered on our business financing by industry page, and our guide to what Yuma businesses use business loans for matches each kind of need to an option. Rockstone Lending connects you with lending partners; partners make credit decisions and set rates and terms.
